The second exhibition in the ONE & ONE series at the Marianne Heller Gallery features ceramics by South Korean artist Seungho Yang and works by German painter Arvid Boecker.
The internationally acclaimed Seungho Yang (born 1955 in South Korea) is known for his unique style. The son of humble fishermen and farmers, he moved to Europe at a young age to understand the depth of Korean aesthetics from a distance. Central to his work is the Korean principle of Mu-Wu (acting through non-intervention). In a mindful dialogue with the clay, he does not dominate the material but rather recognizes and accompanies its natural essence. This naturalness is considered the highest form of beauty in Korean aesthetics. Seungho Yang developed and perfected the Teuim technique. Teuim means cracked. All of his works, fired in a Korean wood-fired kiln (Tongkama), exhibit this cracked aspect and, with their warm, ochre-colored, and rough surfaces, appear as if they have grown organically.
Arvid Boecker (*1964 in Wuppertal) pursues a consistent research strategy within abstract and concrete painting. At the center of his work is the systematic investigation of color, rhythm, layering, and pictorial structure. In slow, process-oriented phases of work, he creates multi-layered oil paintings whose surfaces are characterized by glazed layers, densifications, and partial removals and acquire a particular material depth. Color is experienced not only as a visual phenomenon, but also as a temporal one. Arvid Boecker has an extensive track record of international exhibitions, with shows in the U.S., Asia, Australia, and Europe. At the same time, he is firmly established in the Heidelberg art scene as both an artist and a curator.
