Ken Eastman, UK
Collection of Galerie Kuzebauch, Praque
8 October - 19 November 2023
The autumn exhibition in the 45th anniversary year of her gallery is dedicated by
Marianne Heller to the English ceramics artist Ken Eastman and leading glass artists
from the Czech Republic
Trained in Edinburgh and at the Royal Collage of Art in London, artist Ken Eastman
has been a fixture in the gallery program since 1991. His objects are abstract
enigmatic entities of open and closed forms. The additively assembled stoneware
panels bear a colorful paint job. It seems as if there are resisting forces at work in
Eastman's works, an oddly slightly out-of-order perfection. The painting of numerous
layers of color in muted tones serves an important function. The fresco-like
impression dematerializes the stoneware. It immerses the objects in a meditative,
dreamlike atmosphere.
The glass works form an interesting material contrast to the ceramics in their
translucency and reflective surfaces. From the Czech Republic, famous for its long
tradition of glass art, works by 8 well-known contemporary glass artists can be seen
in cooperation with the Prague gallery Kuzebauch. They include refined model-blown
vases as well as impressive molded sculptural objects. The interplay between vessel
and sculpture is found in ceramics as well as in glass.
